Interview Question: Why Did You Leave Your Last Job

When attending a job interview, there are several questions that are asked. Some questions are related to the everyday work of the individual, while others are professional questions. Every question in the interview is important and is the make or break question that would be the deciding factor as to whether you are selected for the job or not. One such important question is the reason why you left your previous jobs.

There are several answers to the eternal question, “Why did you leave your last job?” While the question can be asked in many ways, the answer should always be the same.

Read further to find out more about the question and its answers.

The question itself can be asked in several ways, depending on the timelines:

If you have recently quit your job and are looking for a job while not working, you will be asked “why you have left your previous job”.

If you are currently working and are attending an interview for another job, you will be asked what the reason that you wish to leave your current job is or why you wish to leave your current job.

Sometimes, the interviewer may also ask “why did you leave your previous job for your current job?”

Regardless of how these questions are asked, there are several types of answers that are acceptable as a reason for leaving a job.

Good and acceptable reasons for leaving jobsUndoubtedly, the acceptable reasons for leaving a job have changed over the years.

For example, even just a few decades ago, leaving a job would most probably mean that a person is either moving from his or her place of residence or that the company itself has closed for good. However, with the change in corporate and human mentality, there are more and more acceptable reasons for leaving a job today.

The average job span of a person has decreased from a good fifteen/twenty years to a mere two to three years. Therefore, if you have worked in a company for two or three years and are now looking for a job, you may have many good reasons as compared to several years ago.

Answering the interview question: why did you leave your last job?The following are acceptable answers as good reasons to leaving a job:

Career growth
You can easily say that you are looking for a change in role and wanted more growth, or even that your position was getting stagnant. This might be an acceptable reason for quitting your job, but this by no means gives you leeway to criticize your job.

Your career path
One reason is basic dissatisfaction with your career. Remember that it is not about the particular company or the department, but your career on the whole. This reason would hold true if you have a rich career profile and are currently applying for a job in a new profession.

Looking for challenges
One of the most common and simple reasons is that your job was at a standstill and you wished to seek newer avenues and greater challenges.

Restructuring
Another common reason nowadays is company restructuring. When a company restructures, it can lay off several people, and in a timeframe. Therefore, even if you have not been directly told to go, nobody would blame you if you are looking for avenues because your colleagues or some other department has been told to go.

Relocation
More often than not, relocation is another reason that is blindly accepted by a company as a reason for looking for another job.

While these are just some of the traditional reasons for a job change, there are some reasons that are more or less accepted today.

Enhanced Education
Another reason that can be provided is enhancement of abilities and education. If you have recently acquired a degree and have decided to utilize your education to enhance your professional profile, this would be a good reason to give for this question.

Workplace distance
Sometimes, even reasons related to daily commutation, like spending too much time commuting from your place of work to your place of residence, as well as less time spent with family can be considered to be the reason/one of the reasons for leaving a job.

Remember that you cannot lie about the reason why you quit your job.

In this era of references and cross references, finding out the real reason why you quit your job is as simple as dialling ten digits on a mobile device.

Interview Question: Do You Have Any Questions For Me?

In most cases, the interviewer invites the candidate to ask questions at the very end of the job interview.

If you want to establish good communication between you and the interviewer, you would want to ask questions, not just any questions – you should prepare yourself to ask the right questions.

When the interviewer asks the question: “do you have any questions that you would want to ask us? During an interview, he doesn’t want to be polite; he actually wants to give you an open invitation to present your thoughts about the job and your expectations.

He or she wants to learn more about you in case he or she missed something during the course of the interview.

In fact, not having well-considered questions to ask the interviewer, is a missed opportunity to learn about the job challenges and what is expected from you.

It is also a good opportunity to get useful information about the company and the workplace culture.

And most importantly, it is another great chance to demonstrate, indirectly, your skills and professional experience and to present the important factors for you on the said job.

You may be surprised to know that most candidates do not take this opportunity and answer – “no, I think we’ve covered everything..”

It is because some candidates mistakenly think that asking questions shows lack of confidence or lack of knowledge. Other candidates haven’t prepared questions, may be too anxious or simply do not have any questions to ask.

You wouldn’t want to be caught unprepared. A good response on your part would be “yes I do.”

How to face the “do you have any questions for me?” interview questionOne of the best ways to handle this is to present the question + to tell why you are asking this question – why is important for you to clarify the issue.

For example –

• You can ask about the job challenges while emphasizing that you like to be motivated by well focused daily work challenges, multi-tasking and even pressure.

• You can also ask about the company policy regarding professional development and tell the interviewer that you would consider this an important aspect for enhancing your skills and experience.

• You may ask about your perspective team and the workplace environment/culture, stating that as a team player effective team work is your first priority.

• Other questions can be asked to high level managers about the company goals, competition, the industry challenges etc., showing an interest in the company and its vision.

You shouldn’t ask too many questions – determine the number of questions you want to ask, when to ask them and pick your questions wisely.

Of course, asking about salary, benefits and vacation, during a regular interview is considered offensive/rude, might make the interviewer uneasy and consequently lead to losing the job interview.

Interview Question: Why Should We Hire You

When it comes to job interviews, there are several questions that are not exactly work related, but are one of the major reasons why your job interview does not provide the results that are in your best interests.

One such question is: “why should we hire you?” Basically, this question is one of the important questions during an interview.

For one, the interview question “give us reasons to hire you”, “why should we employ you” or “what can you bring to our company” is something that differentiates the best candidates from the other good candidates.

This question is more often a surprise question to most individuals who are not as experienced in the process of the job interview. Also, this question works as a divider between the people who are just casually looking for a job and the people who are really seeking a job.

If a person does his or her homework in the right manner, he or she would certainly come across this question as one of the most frequently asked questions and may also know how to handle it.

Answer To Why Should We Hire You While answering this question, remember that the answer should not come across to be egotistical or be completely unrealistic. You should focus on providing reasons to hire you over someone else in the best way you can.

The following are some points to consider:

1. One of the best ways to answer this question is to make a short list of all your advantages and create a paragraph that would point out the positive aspects that you would bring to the new job position.

2. One of the points that you can raise is the similarity of the job profile you are aiming for at the company to the job profile you enjoyed in your previous job.

3. You can also draw the interviewer’s attention to your key skills and strengths, namely – quick learning, excellent communication skills, etc.

4. In addition, your professional ambitions should be made clear – the motivation and dedication that you have for the profession and the opening position.

5. Make sure that your answers do not come out to be too much about yourself or that they come across as conceited.

6. Your body language when you answer the question is important too. For example, your body language should make it clear that you have thought it over and given a carefully worded answer, instead of coming up with a made up, contrived answer.

While answering, firstly, take one of the job requirements, then focus on one of your related strengths/skills AND give a concrete example (a success story) based on your past experiences to support your point. Break the job requirements into fragments and continue in this manner.

For the last sentence, a phrase that can be used is:

The job is tailored to my (or- I will bring my) experience, knowledge base and abilities and I believe I can maximize my skills for the benefit of the company.

Other good phrases can be found at –

1. Why do you want this job.

2. Why did you choose this career.

3. Resume objective examples.

What can you bring to this company? In summing up this question, I believe that it wouldn’t be exaggerating to say that your answer is one of the crucial “make or break” moments in a job interview:

1. Before this question, you’ve already talked about your experience, your education, your strengths and weaknesses and your skills. What else can you say?

2. Keep in mind that other candidates probably answered this question and this is your best chance to distinguish yourself from the others.

3. “Why should I hire you?” – Here is your chance to perform – go and sell yourself!!

This question is not an open invitation to repeat and describe your profile. Your answer should not only focus on yourself – It should reflect back to the job requirements and to the company.

4. The interviewer wishes to observe what you can bring to the company – what your real value is.

Why are you the best person for the job? What can you contribute to this company? think smart..

They’re offering you a ladder to a professional career with a good salary and benefits. What are you offering them?

Don't Ever Change

Dear readers,

Have you tried to change someone, thinking that they could be better off had they improved on their character and attitude? It's a wrong way you are going through, it will definitely NOT work, I am telling you. Perhaps we have to change ourselves instead. And mind you, still they will not change!

Recently, fate has brought me to the knowledge of this book, "How Not To Marry The Wrong Guy: A Guide For Avoiding The Biggest Mistake Of Your Life" by Anne Milford and Jennifer Gauvain. One of the reasons people walk down the aisle despite their cold feet jittering signal is "they hope their relationship will improve after the wedding".

Come to think of it, no one can change you except "yourself". So what makes you think "marriage" can change someone? Isn't it a little too unrealistic, dreamy kind of picture? Points to ponder over..

Quote of the day: Life is short, live it to the fullest

Quote of the day: Life is short, live it to the fullest.

I was slapped with a big questioned one day, "What is your goal?"

I realised I have lived my life to fulfill the wishes of people around me. What is left for myself? What do I want? What really is my goal?

I started thinking, I kept thinking, and I threw this question to friends and family. And I made a resolution:

 "Live life to the fullest"

Buckle up!!

I've been lazy. Time to get that butt off the chairs and blog.

My short term goal:
To improve myself in whatever ways I can. I'll probably start off by brushing up my language :D

Happy

Are you happy? Are you really happy?

When was the last time you threw away the weights off your shoulders?

Crafted a smile from the bottom of your heart?

Or sit in the garden and hear the birds chirping?

Did you laugh so effortlessly till your eyes get watery?

And dance the night without worries?

Think again..

P/S: Life's short, enjoy every moment!

Me and myself

I am very tired.. very very restless..

As I knelt down on my knees, I looked up at the blue blue sky and prayed to God.

I said, "Dear God, I have been good all these years. Can you grant me a favor? All I want is a simple and blissful life."

The 90/10 Principle by Stephen Covey

Stephen Covey has brought revolutionary ideas in self-help. In case you are wondering, the magical moment will be revealed here. Let us discover the 90/10 Principle and tesify for yourself how it can change the way you react to situations. Read on..

What is this principle?
10% of life is made up of what happens to you.
90% of life is decided by how you react.

What does this mean?
We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us.
We cannot stop the car from breaking down.
The plane will be late arriving, which throws our whole schedule off.
A driver may cut us off in traffic.

We have no control over this 10%.
The other 90% is different.
You determine the other 90%.
How?
By your reaction.

You cannot control a red light. but you can control your reaction.
Don't let people fool you; YOU can control how you react.

Let's use an example.

You are eating breakfast with your family.
Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto your business shirt.
You have no control over what just happened.

What happens next will be determined by how you react.

You curse.
You harshly scold your daughter for knocking the cup over.
She breaks down in tears.
After scolding her, you turn to your spouse and criticize her for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table.
A short verbal battle follows.
You storm upstairs and change your shirt.
Back downstairs, you find your daughter has been too busy crying to finish breakfast and get ready for school.
She misses the bus.

Your spouse must leave immediately for work.
You rush to the car and drive your daughter to school.
Because you are late, you drive 40 miles an hour in a 30 mph speed limit.

After a 15-minute delay and throwing $60 traffic fine away, you arrive at school.
Your daughter runs into the building without saying goodbye.
After arriving at the office 20 minutes late, you find you forgot your briefcase.
Your day has started terrible.
As it continues, it seems to get worse and worse.
You look forward to coming home.

When you arrive home, you find small wedge in your relationship with your spouse and daughter.

Why? …. Because of how you reacted in the morning.

Why did you have a bad day?
A) Did the coffee cause it?
B) Did your daughter cause it?
C) Did the policeman cause it?
D) Did you cause it?

The answer is “D".

You had no control over what happened with the coffee.
How you reacted in those 5 seconds is what caused your bad day.

Here is what could have and should have happened.

Coffee splashes over you.
Your daughter is about to cry.
You gently say, "Its ok honey, you just need to be more careful next time".
Grabbing a towel you rush upstairs.
After grabbing a new shirt and your briefcase, you come back down in time to look through the window and see your child getting on the bus. She turns and waves.
You arrive 5 minutes early and cheerfully greet the staff. Your boss comments on how good the day you are having. Notice the difference?

Two different scenarios.
Both started the same. Both ended different.

Why?

Because of how you REACTED.

You really do not have any control over 10% of what happens.
The other 90% was determined by your reaction.

Here are some ways to apply the 90/10 principle.
If someone says something negative about you, don't be a sponge.
Let the attack roll off like water on glass.
You don't have to let the negative comment affect you!

React properly and it will not ruin your day.
A wrong reaction could result in losing a friend, being fired, getting stressed out etc.

How do you react if someone cuts you off in traffic?
Do you lose your temper?
Pound on the steering wheel? Do you try and bump them?
A friend of mine had the steering wheel fall off.
Do you curse? Does your blood pressure skyrocket?

WHO CARES if you arrive ten seconds later at work?
Why let the cars ruin your drive?

Remember the 90/10 principle, and do not worry about it.

You are told you lost your job.
Why lose sleep and get irritated? It will work out.
Use your worrying energy and time into finding another job.

The plane is late; it is going to mangle your schedule for the day.
Why take outpour frustration on the flight attendant? She has no control over what is going on.
Use your time to study, get to know the other passenger.
Why get stressed out? It will just make things worse.

Now you know the 90-10 principle.
Apply it and you will be amazed at the results.

You will lose nothing if you try it.
The 90-10 principle is incredible.
Very few know and apply this principle.

The result?

Millions of people are suffering from undeserved stress, trials, problems and heartache.
We all must understand and apply the 90/10 principle.

It CAN change your life!!!

Before you...

Before you speak.....listen
Often, we speak more than we would listen. On the other hand, some tend to be very defensive or silent, not letting out any thought. Learning when to speak and listen is indeed a challenge to most people.

Before you write.....think
Little did we realise that the pen is the tongue of one's mind. Nowadays, with just a click of a button, what you write can be read across the globe. Thus, before you write in anger or frustation, think hard - that's because the pen is mightier than the sword.

Before you spend.....earn
Any working adult will know how tough it is to earn a penny, but any child will know how to spend it. Be wise with money and secure a financial plan for your future. Prepare an umbrella before it rains.

Before you criticize.....wait
The best thing we can do is to criticize. The next time you want to do just that, count to 10. Anger management works when you co-operate with your inner feelings.

Before you pray.....forgive
Forgive and forget, that's the way to live. I mean, this world is full of lies and deceits. How many percentage of the world's population of honest people still living around?

Before you quit.....try
When everything that you are doing seems all uphill, rest if you must, but don't you quit. Try, try harder, and harder!!

Caltex Neighbourhood Rewards Program - Somber petrol station dealers!

Do you fill your car petrol at Caltex service stations? Have you ever heard about the Caltex Neighbourhood Rewards Program? It works like this: Pump RM30 petrol at participating stations and receive 1 sticker. Collect the stickers to redeem gifts. Mamee instant cup noodle for 5 stickers, Breeze detergent powder for 15 stickers and so on.

I got this picture from the Caltex website: http://www.caltex.com/my/en/PumpCollectWin

Being a loyal customer of Caltex, I managed to collect stickers thoughout the promotional period. However, much to my distress, I never had a pleasant time in several attempts of redeeming the so-called rewards. Let me share my personal experience:

I politely asked, "Hi, boleh saya tukar dishwashing liquid?"

Attempt 1
"Stok sudah habis, datang lagi esok."

I went to the station the next day...
Attempt 2
"Stok sudah habis." "Bila ada stok?" "Tak tahu."

I drove to another Caltex station...
Attempt 3
"Stok sudah habis, pergi stesen lain tukar la."

Finally to yet another station...
Attempt 4
The counter attendant who did not utter any words (like good afternoon) and showing a sour face handed me the gift! Oh yessss.. finally!!!!

It seems like I needed to beg and beg and beg in order to redeem a bottle of dishwashing liquid where I could have bought it from a supermarket for just few dollars rather than filling petrol for at least RM450 to obtain 15 stickers!

I wished stations managers, owners or dealers would spend more effort to improve on customer service, which needs no additional cost to your business but brings more profit and sales! Be courteous to customers and wear a smile! At this era of modernisation where competition is intense, good customer service serves as competitive advantage!
